What is the Michaelite Identity?
The following points and statements are not official. These are just what I believe and understand as a student of St. Michael's College and a member of a family of michaelites( Yes, my mom is a michaelite since kindergarten. My brother had his highschool and college study at St. Michael's College. My sister is a graduate at St. Michael's College in her Bachelor's Degree, and soon in God's grace, I will graduate as a michaelite in my tertiary level. And YES! We're all from the College of Education!)
During the picture analysis in the pageant "Michaelite Ambassador 2016", I was able to pick the picture of the school building itself. Of course this means that I was expected to talk about the school. Thousands of ideas came into my mind. This made me nervous even more, knowing that the more ideas I have, the more unorganized I am with my thoughts.
I remembered then what my professor told me in giving a impromptu speech when I had my Eng-3E class. Wanna know what that is? "The Simpler The Better". 3 points came into my mind afterwards. Faith, Service, and Excellence.
This simply means, this is not about the school at all. Instead, this is about the PRODUCT of the school : The Michaelites.
So what does it take to be at True Michaelite?
1. Faith
What comes into your mind when you hear the word Faith? God, right?
Having faith is believing in what you don't see. Even if life is so harsh and people are rough on you, you believe that there is a reason for everything, and you have trust in the Lord's plans. Religious Study classes are required for every christian to take in all colleges. Knowing Christianity as a whole does not only stop in this class, but Christian practice indoctrination also extends to our Monthly Mass, Special Church Celebrations, Day-to-day prayers, Recollections, and Retreats. This practices plays an important role in our spiritual life. This keeps us reminded to put God in the center of our life, praise him, acknowledge him. Most importantly, this helps us deepen our understanding in what is living in a Christian Life.
2. Service
Being a Michaelite means more than just studying and be a typical student. We also render service not only to the Michaelite community, but also to humanity as a whole. We do have our adopted communities that we support. NSTP classes and requirements are commonly taken for granted. Some students do such service for the sake of grades. But truly, this is a big help to the community already(unknowingly). "Serve thy Lord, and Serve Humanity" is what is being emphasized here. Serving is a simple act of helping, but it could make a huge difference to a person's life.
3.Excellence
Does excellency only limit to academics? I don't think so ;) . Real Talent and Skill will come out during Indigay and Kasaulogan Days. This is when you won't have a choice but to use such for the sake of winning. This is when you will go out of your comfort zone and show people what you got! This is when you will know yourself. This is when you will be empowered. This is when you will know that you're actually good at something. This is when we could be proud of ourselves and to the rest of the people who we know did well as well.
This boils down to one conclusion: A True Michaelite is a Student of St. Michael's College who has fulfilled these Core Values, and thus developed oneself holistically.
I hope this serves as an eye opener for Michaelites who took being a Michaelite for granted.
I AM A MICHAELITE AND I AM PROUD OF IT!
