Why we should pray for them
It has been a culture for Filipinos every November 1&2 to visit their love ones who were not with them literally, but will always be in their hearts. Being with them during those days is just one way of commemorating or remembering them as important people. But the sole reason why we go to the cemetery where these people were buried is to really pray for their souls.
A catholic practice that plays a vital role in this special event is usually perceived by non-catholics as a major sin and is often called idolatry, and this is praying for the Saints. It may sound out of the topic, but truly, it has the same concept as to why we pray for the souls departed that we know personally.
This concept is actually just a cycle.
We pray for the souls of our love ones, so that the Lord will accept them in heaven. With that, they will then enjoy ultimate happiness and eternal life. Novenas, rosaries, prayer services are really in need at this point of time. Even if 40 days have passed already, Prayers are still needed because we don't know what really happened to their souls. And investing your time and effort just to pray for them are really worth it, if the person your praying for means a lot to you and is really close to your heart. It's also a matter of sacrificing yourself to them. Even so, rest be assured that it will be worth it, for the Lord will listen to you, and grant your prayers.
Whenever I have petitions like exams, competitions, discernment, things like that. Yes, I do pray it to God, but I also pray for the people that I personally know, that are now in Heaven with him. Whenever I pray for them, to pray for me, I feel more confident knowing that some people are backing me up. And it just feels really great, because up until now, you could still feel the connection you have with them, even if they are intangible, invisible, but you've always believed that they are still living.
With this, praying for the souls of the people that you know personally, to pray for you, is just like praying for the Saints to pray for you. It's really as simple as that. But the only difference is, Saints that we call "Saints" are known, and has proven miracles that they have performed. And people whom we know personally are still Saints, but only are unknown to other people. But even so, known and unknown saints' prayers for you, are an assurance for the Lord to grant your petition.
So to sum this up, we are not worshiping them. But we pray for them to pray with us.
And we shall remember them through prayers.
